iPad all notes & highlights deleted after syncing

Hi all,

I'm using Zotero on my laptop (Mac) and my iPad. Normally, I manage all the downloads, tags and short notes on my laptop but then highlight and take other notes via my iPad. I was just reading an article on my iPad (with a lot of highlights and notes) and wanted to look something up on my laptop. For that, I refreshed the library on my iPad so I could see all the notes and highlights on my laptop as well. However, instead it pulled the blank pdf from my laptop (I guess?) because now all the notes and highlights are gone. I closed the app in a sad attempt to fix it ("have you tried to turn it on and off again"), but the document is empty... All the notes and highlights are gone. Now I turned off the syncing and tried to find the file on my iPad, but didn't have any success. Is there any way to recover it and to avoid something like this in the future?

Thank you for your help!

What do you mean by “refreshed”?

What’s the zotero.org URL when you select the parent item of the attachment in question in the web library?

I mean that I "swiped down" while being in the app on my iPad, so I refreshed/synced the library? That's at least how it always worked beforehand.

This is the URL from the web library:

You were annotating the other copy of that file in your library, not that one. Your annotations are all still there. You should merge the items or delete one to avoid confusion.
  • I checked yesterday again and there was a second copy of the same item, which wasn't there before. I'm just happy I got my notes back :) Thank you for your help!
  • Just to be clear, both items were there. One was added on September 10th and the other was added on September 19th. Again, you were just looking at the other copy, not the one you had been annotating originally.
