Zotero 7 is constantly malfunctioning in my Google docs

Hi!

I love Zotero, and as a grad student, I've been very grateful for this product for years. But this latest update is driving me crazy.

Report ID: 1883312935

I have a Linux workstation running Ubuntu 24, and I most commonly use Zotero in Firefox (143.0) with Google docs. I'm right in the middle of prepping a manuscript for publication, but Zotero is breaking every half hour, telling me that it experienced an error updating my document when I'm trying to insert a citation. This is in a document without a bibliography inserted currently.

Below is a list of the things I've tried to fix the situation. In summary, even if I fix it and am able to insert citations again, it only keeps working for about 5 to 20 minutes, and then for some reason it starts malfunctioning again.

1. Make a copy of the existing document.

Result: Still broken.

2. Make a new document and paste content from the old document into the new one.

Result: this worked for a little while, I could insert citations, but then stopped working.

3. Iteratively delete half the document and test for citation insertion success, narrowing down the problematic section of text, until I locate a part which, if eliminated, allows me to start inserting citations again.

Result: This works initially. If I delete the problematic section, and then put in a new citation, then continue writing, it works for a little while. But at some point, with a variable duration of successful function, a new citation insertion attempt results in an error again and I have to start all over trying to locate the broken part. I can't figure out why citations that are fine at one point then become an error source randomly (because when I find a problematic citation and eliminate it, the citation I have to eliminate was previously not causing problems in the document and did not get edited by me in any way between the working time and the broken time).

Additionally, when I try inserting a bibliography now, the only thing that pops up is this: {\rtf }

I never had any issues like this with the previous version of Zotero. But immediately after updating to version 7, my documents were broken and I cannot get even brand new ones to work properly for any length of time.

    How large is this document? Approximately how many citations? For very large documents, you're really better off using one Word or LibreOffice — there can just be some unreliability when we depend on an external service.

    What citation style are you using? Have you tried a different citation style?

    If you're willing to share a copy of the document, you can send a share link to support@zotero.org and we can try to reproduce the problem.
  • Hi dstillman,

    Inexplicably, citations are working today!

    The document is 15 pages with only 30-40 citations so far, so I doubt it's the size that is causing an error. I'm using APA 7.
