Word could not comunicate with zotero. Please ensure...

Ok, I dont speak english so I hope you gays can understand me.
I have office 2007, openoffice 3, XP SP3, Firefox 3.5.5, Zotero 2.0b 7.6, ZoneAlarm Security Extreme, TuneUp Utilities 2010.
When I tray to comunicate with zotero from word or openoffice I receive this messege: Word could not comunicate with zotero. Please ensure Firfox is running and try again.
I saw the posible solution in this link http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting. But I just have the default profile and the shortcut command line has not the -no-remote opcion.

Thanks for your help, and again sorry for my english.
  • looks like this, maybe:
    http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/9569/openoffice-cant-communicate/
no clear fix for windows - try following the instructions there and create an error report, too.
Also, make sure FF isn't in offline mode and check if this error occurs also in a new document.

As for your English - it seems perfectly fine, but if you feel you can't express something precisely, just write it in Portuguese or Spanish (I assume one of those is your native language) and either people will be able to understand or I'll be happy to translate.
  • I experience the same problem (I get the "Word could not comunicate with zotero. Please ensure Firfox is running and try again" message when I use any function of Zotero's Word Plugin) but with a different configuration. I have Zotero 2.0b7.6, Firefox 3.5.6, Zonealarm Free and Word 2007 running on Windows 7. I used to have no problems without Zotero until it started one day...strangely, opening Zotero in Firefox works just fine, it's just the plugin (or communication with it) that doesn't work for some reason.

Here is what I have tried so far:
    1. I reinstalled both Zotero and the Word Plugin...still didn't work (actually, the first time I did it, it worked...after that the problem kept occurring and reinstalling Zotero did not help anymore).
    2. I disabled the firewall and tried to insert a citation...same error.
    3. I checked whether Firefox is in offline mode - it is not.
    4. I checked with the netstat -a command whether Firefox is listening to port 50001...everything seems fine.
    5. I threw my computer against the wall...didn't help either (just a joke).

Does anyone have any suggestions for what else I could try?
  • The 2.0–compatible plugins don't use a port to connect to Firefox, so offline mode, firewalls, etc., make no difference.

Reinstalling the main Zotero extension won't have any effect.

Do you have the latest version of the Zotero WinWord Integration plugin?

Have you tried reinstalling Word components from Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions -> Zotero WinWord Integration -> Options?

Be sure you're not using the -no-remote command-line option.

Can you provide a Report ID from after you reproduce the error?
  • Dan, thank you for your quick response.

I have the latest version of the Zotero WinWord plugin and I have also tried to reinstall it (both automatically and by manually deleting the plugin and installing it from scratch...before that I have even reinstalled the Firefox Installer Plugin).

I'm also not using the -no-remote option w/Firefox.

Regarding the error report ID, there is none when I open the Report Error function in Zotero. All it shows in the window is an error of another plugin (Fox Clocks). Zotero seems to be working just fine.

Any other ideas? Could you explain to me in a few words how the communication works between the Word Plugin and Zotero?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!
  • You tried Reinstall Word Components?
  • Yes, I've tried that.

    [JavaScript Error: "[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004002 (NS_NOINTERFACE) [nsISupports.QueryInterface]" nsresult: "0x80004002 (NS_NOINTERFACE)" location: "JS frame :: file:///C:/Archivos%20de%20programa/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/AskSearch.js :: anonymous :: line 150" data: no]" {file: "chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml" line: 442}]

    Saludos
  • Dan - I can't help Jorge here - can you follow what he writes or should I translate more?
The error report he created contained only the above - i.e. nothing zotero related,
but his task manager shows two open firefox.exe - one even if his firefox isn't open. Could that be related to the problem?

    Gracias
  • Jorge10: You should not see any firefox.exe processes if you've closed Firefox. If you do, something is wrong on your system. Does this happen after restarting your computer?

Ok, a continuar trabajando.

(Solo bromeo)

As far as I can tell, Word 2010 works.
  • @adamsmith

    Dear Adamsmith,
It had been working on 2010, but I do not what happened that it has stoped working..
Does it need any more information to clarify more?
    Thnaks.
  • shahab: I had installed an anti-virus found no virus, always told me that my computer was clean. But until i saw this strange process in the task manager I began to think that my antivirus did not work properly, so I installed a new one and found the problem and it killed the problem. I do not know if this is the same case but can function you install another antivirus or that you scan online.

Adamsmith: Zotero has helped me in my work and has made me save time that i can now use to share with my son. I congratulate you for this tool so valuable. My best wishes for your entire team in this new year.
    Thank you for everything.
I hope I have written correctly my english.
