[Solved][Zotero 8 Beta][Safari] Snapshot of Substack page replaces every image with the favicon

edited 7 days ago
OS Version: macOS Sequoia 15.5
Zotero Version: 8.0-beta.9+1469761f9
Safari Version: 18.5 (20621.2.5.11.8)
Connector Version: 5.0.181 from Zotero (As shown in Safari Settings > Extensions)

Example URL: https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/exploiting-male-rage

Saving the above page with Substack translator, the snapshot is saved but lacks all images.

Saving the page with SingleFile directly gives an HTML file with all images.

EDIT: This only happens to Safari. It works for me in Microsoft Edge.

EDIT (2025-10-21): This is partially fixed by commit aae42b7b. Now every image is replaced by the favicon which happens to be the first image fetched by the Connector.

EDIT (2025-10-23): 8.0-beta.16+5b82a3838 has fixed this issue.
  • Works for me.

    macOS 15.6.1
    Zotero 8.0-beta.9
    Firefox 143.0
    Zotero connector 5.0.181
  • I should have mentioned it seems to only lack image in Safari.

It works for me in Microsoft Edge too.
  • Upgraded macOS, still happening

    OS Version: macOS Tahoe 26.0.1
Browser Version: Safari Version 26.0.1 (21622.1.22.11.15)

This should be fixed in the Zotero Connector bundled with the latest Zotero beta (as well as with Zotero 7.0.27).
  • Zotero Version: 8.0-beta.14+d1f478fc4
    OS Version: macOS Tahoe 26.0.1
Browser Version: Safari Version 26.0.1 (21622.1.22.11.15)
Connector Version: 5.0.181 from Zotero (As shown in Safari Settings > Extensions)

    Example URL: https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/after-trump-the-deluge

Saving the above page in Safari with Embedded Metadata translator, the snapshot is saved but all images are shown as the first image in the page, which is a low resolution rabbit.
  • I have submitted a debug log saving the URL above.

    The Debug ID is D1491477952.
  • It seems like indeed somehow all the images embedded as base64 in the snapshot has become the first image fetched in the debug log, which is the favicon.
  • (It also fails with Firefox 144.0, Zotero 8.0-beta.14, Zotero Connector 5.0.185)
  • Realized I had to restart Safari to get the new Zotero Connector loaded.

    Zotero Version: 8.0-beta.14+d1f478fc4
    OS Version: macOS Tahoe 26.0.1
Browser Version: Safari Version 26.0.1 (21622.1.22.11.15)
Connector Version: 5.0.185 from Zotero (As shown in Safari Settings > Extensions)

    Still the same problem.
