APA 7 Discrepancy between Online and Desktop Zotero

Hello,

When generating a bibliography in APA 7 from a video source, the online Zotero correctly formats it thus:

Robinson, K. (2006, February). Do schools kill creativity? [Video]. TED Conferences. https://www.ted.com/talks/sir_ken_robinson_do_schools_kill_creativity

While the desktop Zotero erroneously adds "(Director)." after the author:

Robinson, K. (Director). (2006, February). Do schools kill creativity? [Video]. TED Conferences. https://www.ted.com/talks/sir_ken_robinson_do_schools_kill_creativity

Could the incorrect desktop version be updated to match the correct online version? I saw that someone else posted about this last year but it doesn't look like it has been fixed.

Thank you for your help!
  • I believe it’s the other way around. Desktop Zotero uses a more recent version of the .csl file responsible for how the citation appears, while the web library still uses an older version. I’ll let others comment on which one is valid and whether this needs to be fixed, but we will be updating the web library soon, and after the update it will generate citations matching those from Zotero.

    If you want Ken Robinson to appear without label in the new version, use
    Author: Robinson||Ken
    in the Extra field. This is a bit of a mess with different types of videos -- APA would want the director, labeled as (Director) for a Hollywood movie, but not for Ted Talk or most YouTube videos, but currently the Zotero data model doesn't have something like "author" or "creator" for videos, so you need to use the Extra field to specify it.
  • Okay, that makes sense. Thank you for the solution and explanation!
  • (see edit above for how to add the author to Extra)
