iOS Add by identifier / Barcode scanning option missing on iPad, works fine on iPhone

Hello,

I’m using the Zotero iOS app (1.0.51) on both an iPhone and an iPad (both on iOS 17). On my iPhone, when I tap the + button I see the options:

Add by Identifier

Scan Barcode

Add Manually

New Standalone Note

On my iPad, however, when I tap + I only see:

Add Manually

New Standalone Note

There is no option to add by identifier or to scan a barcode, even though the iPad has a working camera and Zotero has camera permissions enabled in iOS settings.

I’ve tried:

Updating the Zotero app to the latest version

Rotating between portrait/landscape orientations

Checking for hidden icons in the toolbar

Confirming camera permissions are enabled

None of these solved the problem.

Is this a known limitation or a bug? Should the barcode scanner be available on iPad just like on iPhone?

Thanks for your help!
  • Both Add by Identifier and Scan Barcode are available on my iPad (9th gen, iPadOS 18.6.2) with Zotero 1.0.51 Build 366. Barcode scanner is available since iOS 12 and couldn't find a thread reporting an issue with iOS 17.
  • This is perplexing.
I'm using an iPad Pro 10.5 2017 (2nd generation). Cannot update to iPadOS 18.

Hey @auerelep, these actions are available only if you have permissions to edit files in the current library. This seems to be a bug on our side, and will be fixed in an upcoming version.
  • On looking more closely, I see that, on my iPad with iOS, all the options are available for My Library and all my group libraries except this one. And the particularity of this group library is that I am the sole member - i.e. it does not yet have any other members.
  • No, it's exactly what @mvasilak says above: that group is an open public group that doesn't allow file editing. Again, this is a bug that we'll fix, but that's the reason.
  • Ah, yes, confirm that allowing file editing fixed it. Thanks!
