I have a much larger >500k OpenAlex API-exported json file that I converted programmatically to RIS AND to bibtex (and which I'd be happy to share with anaybody who'd want to check as - maybe - an 'edge case'). When I try to import them into Zotero, I get the following (report ID 666617473 - 1,118 records import correctly, the rest not). :Oh and also - does importing bibtex vs ris make a difference (in terms of speed/probability of correct importing)
Not the same issue. The original issue occurs after a successful import. For you, it's somewhat hard to say from the above, but I'd guess either your database is corrupted or (and that would be my guess) you are just hitting performance limits. 500k items are at the outer limits of what Zotero can handle, it's definitely at the outer limits of what it can handle for a single import, so for a start I'd split the file up into 10 or so, which is easy withv ether format.
I'd guess RIS uses a bit less resources on import. The quality should be similar
