  • Thanks for helping, dstillman, but unfortunately that didn't work (Alt F9). And I looked in the Options Advanced settings and the show field codes was not checked.

  • Please can you confirm that field codes is what I can see, for sure?
  • 5.25am. been up all night. must go and sleep. So if anyone responds, I am very grateful and not ignoring you. Come back to it later, if I can sleep at all
  • Yes, those are field codes. If Alt-F9 (or Option-Fn-F9 on a Mac) isn't working, it's possible the field codes have been converted to flat text. That would generally happen if you incorrectly moved the document between programs/formats, or perhaps if something went wrong with Track Changes and Word corrupted the document.

If you send the file to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread, we can take a look.
  • Morning dstillman
Thanks very much for your advice. I have done and sent this link to support.

Actually, re-reading your comment I have not sent the actual document, just the link. Will do that now
  • I'm afraid the ones where you're seeing the field codes are totally corrupted. You can see that some of them don't even have valid footnote numbers — they have other random characters. So something that processed this document really broke things. Again, that could've been Word itself due to some bug or some external tool.

Unfortunately you'll need to reinsert those citations. In the cases where can you see a "http://zotero.org/users" URL, you can paste the 8-character string at the end of the URL (e.g., "L4ZKYB3E") into the Zotero search bar in All Fields & Tags mode from the library root to find the item in question. If you select it, you can then click Add/Edit Citation in Word and insert it by pressing Enter.

(Note that, if you turn field shading on, you can also see that some of the properly formatted footnotes are plain text rather than active Zotero citations. Those wouldn't appear in the Zotero-generated bibliography either.)
