Any mobile text to speech app suggestions?
Hi all,
Does anyone have a favorite text to speech mobile app?
If any integrate in some easy-ish ways with Zotero that’d be amazing, but even if not I’m wondering if anyone has some ones they like?
A couple few things that I’d love it to be able to do, and I’m willing to do a paid subscription to one if needed, are:
- Read article PDFs in a good way
- Allow me to use my native play/pause/rewind X seconds tool on my phone (iPhone in my case)
- If possible upload some book format (eg, ePub) and read it aloud
- Paste a webpage link and have it read
- And of course again, if possible, integrate with Zotero
I see what sounds like a great tool here (https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/116141/announcing-zotts-a-text-to-speech-plugin-for-zotero), but as I understand it it only works for computers and not mobile (I commented on that discussion to ask about mobile so would happily learn I misunderstood if that’s the case!).
Thanks for any guidance or ideas!
Brendan

From what I have read there isn't a readily available way to have a TTS on zotero mobile, and, even the desktop version is limited to using native voice TTS on the device (which they all sound robotic).
On the android store there is a free app called "Read Era" that works.
The Read Era app voices read fluently and actually sound almost human so I would say try this. This app is limited to downloaded files like PDFs, EPUB etc and unfortunately no way to integrate into zotero for notes/ synchronization.
I think the best workflow I have is to use the zotero app on one device without TTS following along and then using an actually good TTS player for listening.
Best of luck,
Paul
