I am still having this issue (as of 5.0.180) - and I can confirm that it is not triggered by any particular edit. Going back to a version that I know had working references does not fix it (the issue appears in the old version now as well).
Clicking the "Z" button in the toolbar does nothing if I am hovering over an existing citation (silently fails). If it is not hovering over an existing citation it works normally. It appears that the document is still fully linked, as I can use the "Refresh" function and add new citations in new places as per normal, but if I do, they immediately lose the "Add/Edit citation hover button and get replaced with simple the zotero link for that citation. The bibliography appears to be unaffected, except that I cannot edit existing citations, and newly added ones immediately break the "edit" functionality as soon as they are added.
If I go into the logs, I do see the Error 500 notification - but it does not appear at any point as a popup error message, only in the logs.
@kybriggs29 Could you provide a Debug ID from Zotero (desktop client) for an attempt to insert a citation? Also provide a Report ID from the Zotero Connector.
@adomsven this issue also occurs in a new blank google doc - any citation inserted immediately loses the ability to edit. Everything else works normally. I have followed the instructions in the link above, but there appears to be no effect. It also appears to be machine-independent, as this happens on two different computers. It is also not browser specific - happens on Chrome and Edge.
Yes. Firefox (a completely clean install of firefox, with zotero connector as the only add-on) has the same problem with existing citations just showing the base link instead of the edit option , though in the firefox case I also cannot add new citations (the red bar never resolves into something into which I can type to search for a citation and just stays red)
@adomasven does that assist with debugging? It is possible, though not ideal, to use another google account temporarily, but there is no guarantee that the same problem does not recur on the new one.
We haven't seen anyone else report an issue like this before. There's some problem on Google's end. It might be worth going to accounts.google.com -> Data and privacy -> Third-party apps and services, then find Zotero Google Docs Integration and remove access for it. Then attempt to cite again and reauthenticate.
