Strange error message with hundreds of question marks.

After converting and syncronising a large library (22,000 citations) I received this error and I don't know where to begin to solve it. Zotero does not let me scroll down to the end of the list of question marks. It looks to me like it may be an error coverting UNICODE characters, but there is no way to find the reference.

  • Can you provide a Debug ID for Zotero startup through reproducing this, using the "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option?
  • Dear dstillman, thank you so much for the quick reply. I was away and I did not see your invitation. The DebugID I have is D1298770592 and it prints out as below. It must be a single reference but I can't seem to find it. It is very frustrating since it is the last hiccup after four months of work.

I also emailed the debug script to support@zotero.org but did not receive a reply.

    1) Install Zotero 7.0.22 from the download page. (7.0.16 for Windows won't currently auto-update.) Your data won't be affected.

    2) Check your database integrity from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero settings. Does it pass?

    3) Restart in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”), which temporarily disables all plugins. If that fixes it, you'll need to identify the plugin that's causing it and then report the problem to the plugin's developer.
  • Dear dstillman,
Thank you so much for your help! The database integrity check shows that there are no errors. If I restart in troubleshooting mode, and synchronise the database again, the error does not appear. It seems that the error is linked to a specific reference which caused one of the plug-ins to choke. However now, restarting the database in full mode the error no longer appears at least on this machine. The error first appeared on my office machine.
I do not have many plug-ins. It would only be Zoplicate I would guess that might run into problems.
  • Yes, Zoplicate is logging stuff at the point where this occurs, for what that's worth.
