I am trying to add citations using Zotero and find if I delete the brackets for the citation to place only around the date, when I close and reopen Word, it asks me if I am happy with each edited citation I have made. Have you had this same issue?

i have checked to see if the article is a duplicate in zotero and it is not

thank you. the citation comes up as (sharp et al., 2006a) but there is no duplicate for it to say a, how can I solve this?

You might have remnants of the citation in your document still. You can switch the to a numeric style (e.g. IEEE) and then turn on Field Codes (https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/word_field_codes)
That can help you locate the stray citation in your document. Delete that and refresh your references then.

great, i have done that and it looks like it has worked! It has now happened to one of the other citations. is there something i might be doing that could be causing it?

This can sometimes happen with copy/pasting things around in my understanding.
If it's just the one, fix it and you'll be ok. If it happens all the time, that's another thing and should be evaluated.
