Using Zotero without an account

I'm currently editing something which claims that Zotero can be used solely as a desktop installation. Which led me to attempt some fact-checking.

I found this in a page linked off the homepage, but can find no further information about what functionality Zotero would or would not have if used locally and without an account. Is Zotero functionally useful if used without an account and syncing? Will doing so allow all PDFs to be stored on the hard drive (an option not available to users logged into accounts...)?

"Zotero is a local program that stores your data on your own computer, and it can be used without sharing any data with us — you don’t even need to create a Zotero account to use it."
  • Yes, all of Zotero’s functionality except syncing can be used without an account. I don’t know what you mean by “an option not available to users logged into accounts...”—when you have an account and syncing set up, all files are first and foremost stored locally and then also additionally stored online. You can set sync settings to download synced files as needed to save local hard drive space, and a future version of Zotero will allow you to set a maximum amount of hard drive space to use to store local copies, but as the quote says, Zotero is at its heart of local program.
