Can't Hide Items from Subcollections

Hi all,

I am using Zotero's desktop app for Windows 11. It seems like either "Show Items from Subcollections" function doesn't work for me or my understanding of it is wrong. Because I don't see anything change after using it. I still see the items in the sub-collections.

I only want to see items (parent [title/metadata] and child items [PDFs]) in a specific collection. For example, I don't want to see the items or sources I added to my sub-collection in its parent collection. I tried editing it in the "View" tab or "Config editor" in the settings but no luck.

In case it's helpful, the plugins I use:

Active: Awesome GPT (zotero-gpt), Better Notes for Zotero (zotero-better-notes), Translate for Zotero (zotero-pdf-translate), Zotero Focused Mode (Zotero-Focused-Mode), ZotMoov, Zutilo Utility for Zotero.

Disabled: Actions and Tags for Zotero (zotero-actions-tags), ZoTTS

Thank you for your responses!

If you disable "Show Items from Subcollections" and you see items in a given collection, the items exist in that collection. You can just remove them.

If you don't think that's working properly, you should try to reproduce it in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”), which temporarily disables all plugins and provide some screenshots showing the problem.
  • @handan.akyuz: You can also check for individual items to which collection and subcollection they belong to by looking at the "Libraries and Collections" section of the Item Pane for that item.
An item can belong to both a collection and its subcollection:

  • Hi @dstillman, thank you for the suggestion! I managed to remove the items from the parent collections and still have them in the subcollections. This is what I wanted! Thank you!

Hi @mjthoraval, I could see the items belonging to multiple collections with holding "ctrl" key and left mouse click. However, I thought I wouldn't be able to remove them from parent items. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Another question, is there a way to prevent Zotero from adding items to both parent and sub-collection when using browser extensions to grab the items? I know now that I can just go into the collections and remove them later on, but it seems like it just doubles the work.

It doesn't. It only adds them to the selected collection.
  • Oh yes, I tried it just now and was going to edit my response to say that I was mistaken. Browser extension only adds the grabbed item to the collection I choose.

    Thank you so much!
