Zotero adding an extra "p"

Hi all

I have set up different format styles in Zotero following the book and then rejigging as I see fit for my needs. Anyhow I noticed recently that Zotero is adding an extra p when I put in p. within a field. I have attached images to show what I mean. In Example-001 you can see that in the Series Number field I have put "1985, September Quarter, Volume:34, p.258, Walsall, Staffordshire, England" yet when I do a style preview I get the image as seen is Image-002 with an extra p placed in front of p.258 - "Albert Edward Washbrook, Death Index, GRO Online Indexes, 1985, September Quarter, Volume:34, pp.258, Walsall, Staffordshire, England (General Register Office, 2025), https://gro.gov.uk."

Is anyone able to explain why this is occurring?

Thanks

Megan

It's probably not the best way to record the information you need. Many elements in your Series Number field would fit better in different fields (volume number in the Volume field, for example).

Regarding your specific question: specific pages inside a book or another document should not be part of the record, but added when needed in the citation: https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_usage#customizing_citations
  • Unfortunately as a family historian a lot of the information we need to capture does not fit well into the Zotero fields and so we have to use other ways to encapsulate what we need. I have tried using other item types to put the information in that has volume and page number but have found the final citation is not in the order I require it to be.

I understand that I can add the page number when doing a citation but in this instance it is not relevant to what I am trying to achieve. I am not currently putting my family history citations into formal documents. The page number in this particular example above is specific to that particular record and is the information required to order the formal certificate and it is not like citing from a journal article. When I do formal writing for uni I add the page numbers as you have suggested but this does not always work for family history research.

I an just trying to understand when there is a string of text, as I have in the series number above, why the p. gets changed to pp.

  • What's happening is that Zotero (or rather the citation formatting processor it uses) is a bit too aggressive in trying to understand and parse the contents of fields, and understands "p. 258" as the number of pages, and since 258 is more than 1 then uses the plural abbreviation "pp.". I think that goes a bit far and should very likely get fixed, but that might take a bit.
In the meantime, this (though rather hack-ish) basically tells Zotero to leave that bit of the field alone and will work to get you the desired p.258:
Albert Edward Washbrook, Death Index, GRO Online Indexes, 1985, September Quarter, Volume:34, <span class="nocase">p.258</span>, Walsall, Staffordshire, England
  • Okay thank you for that :)
