Style Preview not showing new style

I was getting an exception error today and after some research established that my Turabian Style was out of date. I downloaded the current version from the style repository and uploaded it to my desktop (Mac) Zotero. Turabian is showing up in the Style Manager pane but not in the Style Preview pane. I have closed and reopened Zotero and that has not worked. I checked Zotero is up-to-date - it is. Any other suggestions for getting the new style to show in preview like it did previously?

Do you mean in the item pane header?

You may need to reselect a Header Citation Style in the General pane of the settings.
  • Turabian is downloaded and showing in Style Manager. However, when I select refresh in the Style Preview pane it is not showing up but all my other styles show up.

The Turabian styles are just dependent styles pointing at Chicago 17th styles, so they don't show up in the CSL tools. (I guess no real reason dependent styles couldn't show up in Style Preview. They don't really make sense in the Style Editor.)
  • It always had shown up previously as I have been using it for years; however, all of a sudden this week I got the "exception" error and then when I downloaded the updated version of Turabian it didn't work. I'll just revert to using Chicago for my citations.

Yes, the dedicated Turabian styles were removed and replaced with dependent styles as part of the Chicago 18th overhaul, since they're not really intended to be different from Chicago.
  • Okay. I was using an older Turabian version and when I went to the style repository I found a newer one so downloaded that and it did nothing. I'll just use Chicago.

But what do you mean by "did nothing"? Again, dependent styles don't show up in Style Preview, because that's primarily been a tool for style developers. They would work fine to actually generate citations anywhere else in Zotero.

I've also explained this to you before. I guess I'm a little confused why you're so concerned about the Style Preview? Generally, if you have to cite something, you know what style is called for and choose it when you go to generate citations. That's the point of dependent styles — you can choose "Turabian" if that's what your requirements call for even though it's really just Chicago.

To be clear, if you mean that you're using Style Preview to manually generate (and then copy and paste?) citations, that's absolutely not something you want to do — that's not the way to use Zotero. See Creating Bibliographies for the actual ways that you generate citations in Zotero.
  • That is what I have been using Style Preview to do. Why would this not be appropriate? If I'm writing a paper using Word I use the Zotero plugin to create my footnotes and bibliography. However, I use it for personal genealogy research and so just cut and paste the result from Style Preview into FTM and then Excel to keep a record of what documents I hold for an individual.

There are faster ways to copy citations, as explained in the link provided by dstillman.

Dependent styles were added to Style Preview in Zotero 7, and it is working fine for me on Windows:

@RedDwarf: What is your Zotero version?
What is the exact name of the Turabian style that you have added?
Can you show a screenshot of your Cite settings showing the Turabian style you are using?

Have you tried deleting the old Turabian style from your Style Manager, and adding the new one again through the "Get additional styles..." link below the Style Manager?
  • I assume @RedDwarf is just still on Zotero 6, then, but it doesn’t matter. @RedDwarf, you should upgrade, but regardless, don’t use Style Preview for this. You want to use Quick Copy. See the link I provided above.
  • Zotero Version 6.0.37
I removed the Turabian Style yesterday when I got the exception error and doing some googling recommended to remove it. That stopped the exception error on all the styles in style preview. I then went to the repository and downloaded the most current Turabian version (9th edition) but it does not show in style preview. I've had a look at the link that dstillman provided and now know how to copy doing it with the options. I think that is actually slower for copying citations as I check in preview to ensure the citation is populating the way I require it and then I just copy from there. I still really don't understand why coping from preview isn't recommended though.
  • Turanian is just a dependent style of Chicago. So use that instead.

@RedDwarf: After upgrading to Zotero 7, you can also switch the new item pane header to Bibliography Entry mode, which will show you a preview, and copy from the right-click menu there.

The Style Preview requires you to navigate through the settings to open a window that generates citations in all installed styles. It's just not meant as a tool for everyday use like this.
  • Okay. I've just downloaded 7 and I'll see how that goes. Thank you for all your assistance :)
