Cleaning up online storage

My online storage is full, I think because before I understood the problem, I was syncing attachments to Zotero. I've now stopped syncing attachments to Zotero and set up WebDAV syncing for that, but am not sure how to free up space in my Zotero storage.

I've read elsewhere online that I need to delete my files online at Zotero. Is that correct?

I've also read that I should close zotero, delete my online files, and then restart and sync, but I'm not confident that that's correct, and would like to avoid disaster. I have backed up my files locally, but would appreciate if someone who really knows could clarify the steps or point me to a clear explanation.

Thanks very much.
  • Absolutely don't delete any files anywhere. This is one of the few scenarios where 'purge storage ' from the upgrade storage link here on the page is appropriate.

Thank you. Do you mean the "purge storage" link at the bottom of the storage page? Do I need to do anything other than backup before doing that? Should I shut down Zotero, for example?
  • If you are already using WebDAV, you can just use the purge option, nothing else needed
  • Do I then need to do anything to recreate my online library? It's now showing that my storage is 0 MB but when I sync manually, it is not doing a sync of the full library. Thank you for all the help.
  • Do you mean to sync your file attachments to WebDAV? Because your library should still be online; purge storage doesn't affect metadata sync.
  • Thanks--I was concerned because now it says that my storage is 0 MB, and I thought that the library itself must take up some space. I can see that my library is still there.
I appreciate the help--I have been trying to figure this out for some time. Many thanks.
  • Your library (metadata for your items) and notes (except inserted images) do not count towards your quota. They are free to sync.

The quota is for file syncing.
  • Thank you to both of you for your help and explanations.
