Inconsistent in-text citation

Hello all,
I am having a very frustrating problem with zotero lately. I am trying to use citation style for Methods in Ecology and Evolution, downloaded the style etc, but the in text citations, are inconsistent throughout the document for citations with more than 1 reference. In some cases, the in-text citation is sorted alphabetically , and other times its chronologically, and I can't find a way to fix this. I have changed the reference style to multiple other styles, then I come back to the MEE and still get this inconsistency. Can anyone help?
  • Could you provide a couple of examples of items (both how they look in text and their corresponding bibliography entries? The style should reliably sort alphabetically in text (the journal just uses APA style)
  • Hola Adam,

Thanks, below an example coming out chronologically

.... declines (Sánchez-Bayo and Wyckhuys, 2019; Blüthgen et al., 2023; Halsch et al., 2024)

    next alphabetically,

...ecosystems (Conrad et al., 2006; Didham et al., 2020; Harvey et al., 2023).

    again chronologically

....goals (Kitching et al., 2001; Basset et al., 2012; Lamarre et al., 2012; Yi et al., 2012; Montgomery et al., 2021; Anderson et al., 2024).

By switching through several styles, it seems that the problem as been corrected as far as I can see. I don't know if it was some bug somewhere preventing updating.

  • This looks like it was sorting chronologically which is NOT what APA does. Are you sure you had the correct style set in your document under Document Preferences and the citations were refreshed?
(switching between styles rerenders all citations, so maybe it was just what you needed)
  • It just didn't have the right style at all before (note the 'and' in the first citation).
    I'm glad it's fixed now.
