Recently, I have tried uploading documents into Zotero using my iPad and iPhone and the documents are automatically becoming an attachment. I am unable to change the type of document on my iPad, iPhone, or MacBook. On my MacBook, I am only able to change the document through assigning a DOI or book number.

You can create an item by identifier from the + menu and then drag a standalone attachment on top of it.

The iOS app doesn't yet support retrieving metadata for PDFs, but that's coming soon — it's currently available in the beta version.

Generally, though, as in the desktop app, you want to save to the app from the article page in your browser, and the app will save metadata and automatically attach a PDF if one is available.
  • That is a lot of extra work. Previously, I was able to drop a document in, and it would automatically attach it as a journal document. I’m confused why this has changed, and now I'm adding it as an attachment.

No, you’re misremembering this. Again, metadata retrieval is coming, but it has never been a feature of the iOS app. It’s a feature of the desktop app.
