Terms on unlimited zotero storage

I’ve been a long-time user with ZotFile and local file syncing, but recently made the switch to Zotero cloud storage, as it's really easy for group collaboration and friendly to non-zotero users. That said, I noticed there were no specific terms outlined when signing up for unlimited storage.

Could anyone clarify if there are any limits or conditions attached? I’d also love to hear how the team views typical usage vs. potential abuse. My current library has around 4,000 items and 10 GB of attachments, but I expect it to grow significantly. Two use scenarios we're considering are 1) systematic literature review and 2) sharing raw data / code for certain projects. Your insights are greatly appreciated. I'm raising the question mainly due to the frustration with other cloud providers over the year (esp. Google)
  • The terms are here https://www.zotero.org/support/terms/terms_of_service and don't have any usage restrictions on data sync other than the typical warning not to do anything illegal/destructive.

The maximum file size for individual attachments on data sync is ~5GB and that's unlikely to change any time soon (it's the max file size for an individual file upload on AWS S3 without chunked upload).

Many people use Zotero with massively larger libraries than yours and for systematic reviews.
I think it's a bad tool for data and code sharing (no versioning, no file locks that prevent conflicts or good conflict resolution below the file level, etc., security and auditing is perfectly suitable for bibliographic data but not for anything remotely sensitive) but apart from the 5GB constraint I wouldn't see why you couldn't use it for data (and code) in principle.
  • Thanks for the prompt reply! Yes in this group besides the normal bibliography storage, we intend use the zotero library as a groud truth collection for immutable sources, like archived raw data in zenodo / code in some publications. i think we're in a quite safe position regarding usage then :)
