Sharing my fix for the Zotero Connector connection issue

Just sharing a fix for an issue I ran into today, in case it helps anyone.

My Zotero Connector in Chrome wouldn't connect to the desktop app. After trying all the usual solutions with no luck, I found the culprit was a Chrome permission.

I had to change the Zotero Connector's "Local network access" setting from "Ask" (the default) to "Allow". It connected instantly after that.

Hope this saves someone else some time!

The Local Network Access permission isn't currently enabled by default. Did you opt in? Or are you running a beta version of Chrome?

It's not clear this setting is even supposed to apply to extensions. Extensions aren't mentioned on that documentation page, and they're not supposed to use standard webpage permissions — there's a separate system for extension permissions. We'll open a Chromium ticket for this.

(The lack of a prompt is a known issue mentioned on that page, either way, but we're really hoping this applying to extensions is just an oversight.)
  • @dstillman Thanks for the reply! You are right. I was indeed using the Chrome dev version on the computer with the issue.
I just confirmed on another machine with the stable release of Chrome, and the Zotero Connector works fine there. It seems to be a bug just in the Dev version.
  • Thank you very much for your solution. I have successfully solved the problem that has been bothering me for a whole morning. The Chrome version I use is 140.0.7259.2 dev . I would like to share my solution with you guys: enter chrome://flags/#local-network-access-check in the search box, change Local Network Access Checks from default to enabled, and Zotero Connector will work properly.
