Android: opening downloaded files

How can I open downloaded files in a different app for reading aloud or other operations?

Can you provide an option? Say, a long press on a file icon in the list gives options to open in Zotero or other associated apps given the file type.

Or can I easily locate them in the file system? I could not find them.

I found the options via the long press on the attachment. There, it is not clear what "Move to Standalone Attachment" will do, I am unwilling to experiment on live data. But maybe it is here that an option to show in the file system folder and to open in a different app could appear.

Thanks.

There's an option in the iOS app to export files, with or without annotations, and that will be possible in an upcoming version of the Android app as well, but that's just for exporting, not opening files directly.

The built-in reader will continue to gain new features, so if there are specific things you're looking to do, you should request those in new threads.
  • Comment deleted because I missed that the question was for Android. My suggestion of the zotero-open-pdf plugin obviously only works for Zotero desktop.

The primary aim is to listen to articles. I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hyperionics.avar&hl=en-US You will not be able to match its outstanding functionality that grew over many years, and nor should you have to if you allow the user to open in a different app or explain/show where the downloaded file is in the system. Just being able to search for a file in Zotero app, and then have access to the file outside of it once downloaded is all I am after here, no annotations are needed.

Without being able to do this, I shall have to continue using Zoo for Zotero.

Sounds like 'export' will do it even though with a few extra clicks...
  • It's possible to export PDFs — with or without annotations — from the reader in the latest version of the app.

(Android also provides a mechanism for sharing files with other apps in a read-only way that we might be able to support in a future version.)
  • Yes, I saw. Thanks a lot, this sorts out my immediate need and is much more flexible.
