using some item type, no snapshots are taken with Zotero Connector?

Hello,

using this paper as an example: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adt0647
- saving it per button in the toolbar which saves an item of type Journal Article to Zotero: the connector tries to get the PDF (but fails) and saves no snapshot of the webpage at all.
- saving per context menu 'Webpage with Snapshot' it saves a snapshot, but does save it (of course) as web page item.

I had a look at Zotero settings, and the checkbox at 'Automatically take snapshots when creating items from web pages' is checked.

Is there another location where I can set something in order to get it to save a snapshot for every item type?

greetings

  • Zotero uses different scripts ("translators") to save different sites. Every translator is different, but they generally try not to save a snapshot when a PDF is available, since the snapshot would just be redundant in that case. Unfortunately, it isn't always possible for a translator to know if the PDF will save successfully. If the PDF fails to save, you might end up with no PDF and no snapshot.

A future version of Zotero will improve this behavior.
  • oh oh, this coming development is greatly appreciated from my side!

And I must add that I understand when I check 'Automatically take snapshots when creating items from web pages' that it should take a snapshot every time I do click on the button of the extension in the browser. The browser mostly displays webpages - that's what it is used for...., so why on earth can a translator disable that silently :-?

So it's good to know that improvement is on the way!

    greetings
  • Well, snapshots can be very large, even on simple pages, and it’s unlikely that you’d want a snapshot from e.g. a library catalog page that just lists the info in the item.

If Zotero does not add a snapshot and I still want one, I use the SingleFile browser extension to save a snapshot to my computer, and then I add it to the Zotero item. I believe that is the same code that Zotero uses to create snapshots. Here's that extension for Chrome (it's available for most browsers):
