Dear Zotero developers,

A lecturer at our university is making extensive use of the integrated Zotero PDF reader for preparing seminars and analyzing academic texts. In this workflow, he assigns annotation tags to specific highlights within the PDF (i.e. tags that are attached directly to a particular annotation, not the general item-level tags).

He is looking for a way to gather, merge, or export all highlights that have annotation tags assigned to them – ideally into a single Zotero note or an external file where the highlight text, comment, and tag are clearly visible.

His questions:

Is there currently a way to filter by annotation tags or to generate an overview of all annotations that use them?

Is it possible to export annotations including their tags into a note or an external format (e.g., a text file)?

If this is not yet possible, are there any plans to make annotation tags more accessible or exportable in the future – e.g., via the interface, a plugin, or the API?

Thank you for your excellent work on Zotero – the PDF reader and annotation tagging features are already very helpful tools in higher education.
