Zotero for Android, search

In Zotero for Android, the search function has no option to search for author (creator?). It seems to just search the titles. But for me, for instance, the author search is far more useful.
  • There's a single search field, and it searches for creators as well. If that's not working for you, provide some screenshots of exactly what you're trying.
  • The unrestricted search brings up too many results, sometimes it is not even clear where the word appears in the documents.

It's equivalent to the default All Fields & Tags search mode in the desktop app. It's not searching document content. We might add an equivalent to Title, Creator, Year mode in a future version, but if you search for a name, you should generally just get results with creators matching that name.
  • Some creators have a simple name that is matching lots of word parts in titles (I have thousands of documents). So the possibility of search restriction (for example to creators) would help.
  • I mean, sure, a name like "Ho" could return various other items, but it's hard to imagine this being a huge issue in general. Most names aren't going to match many other fields. And you can always add part of a title or a year to narrow it down further.

Again, this is the same search mode that's always been available in the desktop app (without using advanced search or sorting by creator). We can consider adding additional filter options, but it seems a bit strange to knock the first version of the Android app for not going beyond what the desktop app has always offered.

And just to reiterate, your review in the Play Store, and your initial claim here, was incorrect — it is absolutely possible to search for authors.
  • Here is an example: I searched for author Wolf, and one of the may items returned was:

Forbidden Substrings, Kolmogorov Complexity and Almost Periodic Sequences
    by Rumyantsev and Ushakov.
If you go to the desktop and check the metadata, it turns out that this is a book section, and one of the editors of the book is Wolfgang Thomas.
So in order to avoid lots of irrelevant results, the ability to restrict, as it is available in the desktop version, is important.

I don't know what you're referring to. The search bar in the desktop app matches editors as well as authors — both in "Title, Creator, Year" and "All Fields & Tags" modes. Again, the search bar on Android works exactly like the desktop app has always worked.

There's an Author option in the Advanced Search window in the desktop app. The very first version of the Android app obviously doesn't have an advanced search mode. The iOS app has been out for several years and doesn't have that either, and I don't think it's ever been requested.

The items list also shows you the author below the title, so it's not like you can't quickly see whether it's what you're looking for.
