PDF viewer on intel Macs

I am using a quite powerful 2019 Intel iMac (64GB RAM, internal SSD, 3.7GHz 6 core i5.

The scrolling through the PDF is extremely slow. Moving up/down with the keyboard is not that bad.

Text highlighting. When you start dragging for selecting a text fragment, it takes some seconds before the selected text shows up.

Is there anything I can do to to speed it up?

  • 1) Can you reproduce this issue with all third-party plugins disabled?
    2) Does it occur with all PDF files?
    3) In Settings → Advanced → Config Editor, is the layers.acceleration.disabled value set to true or false?
  • 1) I have only one plugin listed in Tools->Plugins, which is BetterBibTex. Disabling it does not affect performance in PDF scrolling.

    2) No. A small number of files is not affected. My PDFs are all scientific papers downloaded from arXiv or from the website of the publishers. I cannot find any pattern in the slow down: it does not depend on the length, publisher, etc.

    3) It was set to false. Switching to true does not solve the issue.

    Thank you for your answer.
