et al replace only one name - in-text citation, APA7
Hi Zotero community,
I would like to present a question regarding in-text citations in Zotero.
For example, I have the following two papers to cite:
- Author A, Author B, Author C (2025). Title. Journal.
- Author A, Author C, Author B (2025). Title. Journal.
Zotero's default in-text citation appears as follows:
- (Author A, Author B, et al., 2025)
- (Author A, Author C, et al., 2025)
However, according to APA guidelines, "et al." must replace at least two names (APA6: https://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2011/11/the-proper-use-of-et-al-in-apa-style.html;
APA7: https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/citations/basic-principles/same-year-first-author).
In this case, I need to list all authors in the in-text citation:
- (Author A, Author B, & Author C, 2025)
- (Author A, Author C, & Author B, 2025)
Is there a way to make Zotero do this automatically, or will I need to manually check all references?
Thank you for your assistance!

poettliThis blog post is about APA6.

psychpanThank you for the comment. The same issue exists for APA7 as well.

adamsmithNo, Zotero can't do this automatically. APA's logic here is weird -- et al. of course can equally abbreviate et alius and et alia -- and APA journals don't actually follow the rule, but if you want to follow it to the letter, you have to do so manually.
