webpages and PDF files

Hi, some webpages and PDF files are not saving all the information needed to complete reference correctly.

I am adding the information manually- is this what I should do? thank you
  • Please provide specific examples so that someone can take a look.
  • I have tried saving NICE guidelines from the website or PDF in zotero. Misses the author, year etc.

Also diabetes UK website is another one I have had to populate the information on myself.

    hope this makes sense

It makes sense on a general level, but by "specific examples" I meant the exact links of documents for which you could not retrieve the desired information.
  • https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/diabetes-type-2/. I am trying to save a clinical summary about Dpp4 inhibitors.
  • adding them on web library, add identifier then copy and pasting website address
  • The NICE content seems to be available only from the UK and associated territories so I can't be sure, but the platform might not expose the information in a way that Zotero can use. Maybe someone from the designated region could take a look?

Do you have an example from the Diabetes UK website?
  • any suggestions who to ask in my designated region? I live in the Scottish Borders.

The diabetes uk website was about number of people with pre diabetes.

Region: my comment was for all others on this forum, hopefully someone within the perimeter will notice.

Diabetes UK/pre diabetes: was it this page? https://www.diabetes.org.uk/about-us/news-and-views/one-five-adults-now-live-diabetes-or-prediabetes-uk

If so, there isn't a lot of information to capture and on my machine Zotero seems to do what it can - or maybe I'm missing something? Again, be as specific as possible when you report problems.

    Thanks for the link!
Now I don't see much information that's citable on that page: the title (Zotero is getting it on my machine), the name of the web site (got it as well), the access date (always needed for proper citation of a web page), a summary... that's it, it will be poor but just sufficient in many cases.

I assume you are also interested in the "Diabetes is Serious 2022" PDF? Sadly, as far as I can tell, it doesn't contain any structured information in a format that Zotero could use - which is unfortunately common for institutional reports such as this.

So yes, I'm afraid there isn't really a better way for your references from this web site.
  • the other thing was this:
    https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng28/chapter/Context.

was wanting to save the whole PDF file as in the guideline NG 28
  • Zotero gets pretty good metadata on that page. Just need to change the item type from Webpage to Report and do a bit of title cleanup. After you save the main item, you can open the PDF in your browser and drag its URL onto the item that was just created in order to add it as an attachment.

But you'll need to be using the Zotero desktop app to do the second step. The web library is far more limited and not intended to be used as a primary interface to manage your library.
