Zotero placing bibliography in the middle of my document - Report ID: 808439962

edited 23 days ago
Hello

I'm using a Macbook Air to write up my thesis.

The first problem is that I'm trying to cite my references to my large thesis document. An issue I encounter is that zotero is very slow and takes a while to place citations in the document. I have tried to solve this by making sure that "Automatically update citations" is disabled, which has only helped a little. so zotero is still slow in placing citations. I understand that zotero on Mac works slowly when it's a large document.

The bigger issue right now is that whenever i want to add the bibliography to the references page, it won't place it in the correct page even though i have placed the cursor on that page. Other times, when it does finally create a bibliography, it places it in the middle of the page. I've tried looking for a solution to this in the forums and i want to try is to "toggle on field codes". Discussion about this problem is in the link below:

https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/23434/bibliography-inserted-into-middle-of-document-every-time-i-cite-something

However, this solution is for Microsoft laptop or desktop users. My question is how do you do this on Mac?

Appreciate a quick solution to this problem!

Thanks.

To be clear, though, if you already have a bibliography (or the remnants of one) in the document, you would get the Edit Bibliography window when clicking Add/Edit Bibliography.

If there's no bibliography, it should insert a bibliography at the cursor position. Make sure you're not moving the cursor while it's generating the bibliography.
  • Thanks @dstillman

In the past i just click on the Add/Edit Bibliography button and the list of citations is added. I didn't notice or don't remember if the Add/Edit Bibliography changed to Edit Bibliography after the citations were added.

I went to link you shared and have the I've deleted the ZOTERO_BIBL

Now, when i click on the Add/Edit Bibliography, nothing happens. So, there's no Edit Bibliography on its own, and no citation list added.

Instead, I've received the following notification after pressing the Add/Edit Bibliography button:

The Zotero field code corresponding to this citation, which tells Zotero which item in your library this citation represents, has been corrupted. Would you like to reselect the item?

Clicking "No" will delete the field codes for citations containing this item, preserving the citation text but potentially deleting it from your bibliography.

how do i proceed after this?
  • You should say yes and reselect the item.
  • How do i know which item it is?

A dialogue box came up with list of references to add to the list i have for my bibliography.

I saw that there's a reference highlighted and i selected that one.

After i clicked ok, this message popped up:

Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

Would you like to view troubleshooting instructions?

    What now?

Does it say Edit Bibliography at the top? That would mean you have a bibliography in the document.

Note that, in a large document in Mac Word, it could have easily taken a while for the bibliography to be inserted. And after it was inserted, clicking Add/Edit Bibliography again would show you the Edit Bibliography window. You almost never need to use that.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Can you provide a screenshot?
  • @malsaffa Would you follow the final step of Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents and send a snippet that reproduce this error to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?
