can't add files

I got a message that my group has reached it storage capacity. Despite purging hundreds of files and purchasing more storage capacity, it still can't add any files. What am I supposed to do?
  • You're not the owner of any groups. The group owner can transfer ownership to you if you'd like it to use your storage.
  • even if I'm not the owner, shouldn't there be more room in the current folder if I have deleted hundreds of files? Please let me know how I can save journal articles. I am trying to submit a paper and was planning to use Zotero for citations and my reference list. I was able to save about 80 papers, but then it just stopped allowing me to save even though I have deleted over 400 papers and emptied the trash.

You can save as many items and their data into Zotero, and they will sync. No limits there. Storage syncing is irrelevant - only applies to attachment files.
I was able to save about 80 papers, but then it just stopped allowing me to save ...
You can locally save to your database as many items AND their attachment files as you want. Zotero is free to use locally. The attached files may not sync to another computer, but that will not affect the items and the pdfs being locally added to your Zotero library.

Any chance you are doing too many saves too fast and hitting a site access limit at some database (like Google Scholar)?

  • Thank you all for the helpful links and suggestions. I guess I am not understanding how to access my local storage, which should be unlimited. The only button I see is Web Library, so I don't understand how to get to local storage. Also, now that I just bought some storage, how do I become the owner of a group? I thought I did start and invite people to groups, but now you are saying I am not the owner of any groups?
  • Local storage means you are using the Zotero app on your computer and item data and files are getting saved to your computer (which can then be synced to Zotero's servers, if you choose to do so). Are you not? The Web Library is a bit limited in its capabilities.

Did you install the app on your computer from here: https://www.zotero.org/download/

OK, I am now the owner of the group. I purchased extra storage. I deleted all files and emptied the trash. I am still unable to save any files. Any ideas?
  • Where are you trying to save from? If google scholar, see the link in dstillman's post three above.
  • I search in Google Scholar, but then go to the journal website and pull up the full paper. Then I try to save. Can Google Scholar block me once I leave the GS search page?

We always need an example URL for problems with saving, and you need to say what the actual problem is that you're experiencing. A screenshot would likely help.
  • Even if GS is blocking me, it should allow me in a "few hours." I did not try to save for over 8 hours today and still no go.
  • Here are two examples.
Trying to save the paper here: https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/abs/10.7326/0003-4819-34-5-1243

    And this paper here:
    https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/micc.12492

It no longer gives the message that I've hit my storage limit, but my Zotero button does not say it is saving.

Maybe I need to reinstall the program?

We really need a screenshot and/or a longer description of the problem. See Steps to Reproduce for the kind of description we need. I genuinely don't know what the issue is that you're experiencing right now.

I have no trouble saving both the data and pdf for those papers from those two links you had. This has nothing to do with Google Scholar or your storage limits. Reinstalling the program is unlikely to change much. Though making sure it is up-to-date, especially the Zotero Connector in your browser is a good idea.

We don't know what you mean when you say "it is not saving". What is "it"? No item (data) in Zotero is appearing? Or no pdf or html snapshot are being attached to the item?

If the latter, is this an open public group? Those do not allow files to be attached to items (but items can still be saved, obviously.)

(And please follow dstillman's instructions above with a screenshot/video.)
  • I restarted my computer and uninstalled then reinstalled Zotero and that seemed to work.
