[Discussion] url for every item

dear all,

we are looking for an opportunity to saving an url for every item, especially when I use the magic wand. It would be great to know the origin of the data, e.g. for ISBN numbers.

The perfect example is metadata of a doi. Of course, a DOI has always a URL.

A default url is especially useful in all digital publishing contexts, where every citation can be linked to a standard resource - like an authority file.

For other items and identifers we are looking for a standard catalogue. Maybe openlibrary.org might be a good candidate.

Could this concept be a proposal for a feature? Or should it be an good manner of the community .

  • An addition: In my case (nearly) every ISBN result comes from K10plus. Why not linking to this catalogue and include a url with identifer?
  • The URL field is included in citations, and a URL should generally be cited only when it points to a full-text source for the item. The URL of a catalog page (as in your K10plus example) wouldn't belong in a citation.

If you want to keep track of a URL without including it in citations, you can add a link attachment via Add Attachment -> Attach Web Link.... A few translators (scripts that ingest identifiers/webpages) do that automatically for catalog page URLs.
