Importing from Endnote 8.0 to zotero 1.0

Hi,

I know there are a lot of discussions regarding importing and exporting, but I was not able to find the specific answer to my question. I had no trouble exporting my endnote 8.0 files to zotero 1.0, using Refman (RIS) Export style. However, certain fields went missing. For example in exporting a database of books with notes, the publication information and "abstract" categories translated fine, but my "research notes" that contained extensive notes on the books did not get translated as notes on the zotero file. These notes just went missing. Aside from cutting and pasting manually for every entry, is there anything I can do to correct this problem? If I have mistakenly missed a post on this subject, I'd appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

    open the RIS file with a text editor. Paste one of the entries that contains such a research note here - we'll need to see where (and if) endnote puts the research note content in the RIS.

    I am afraid I don't know how to open an RIS file with a text editor; I am sorry. Do you have instructions? In the meantime, I have solved my first problem and come up with a second one. To get "research notes" imported correctly, you first have to go to "change and move fields" in endnote under references. Move the content from "research notes" to "notes." Then do the ordinary export and import process.

    Here's the new problem, which is proving more difficult to solve. I have endnote 8.0 databases comprised of manuscript notes. Under these endnote files, I have put the archival collection information in a field called "collection title" and the box and folder information in a field called "number." I can't figure out how to get this content into the appropriate fields, so that zotero 1.0 imports all the appropriate content including author, title, collection/repository, box and folder (this could go in the zotero "extra" field), etc. Right now, when I try to import, Zotero is reading these files as webpages.

    yeah, that might be hard - one of those entries would help, too.
    open an RIS in a text editor by right-clicking on the file, selecting "open with", and selecting "notepad" as the program to open it (provided you're on windows).
    On Mac, I don't know, should be pretty similar, though, except that "notepad" is "TextEdit" or something like it.

    you have to try to move either the contents of the fields that do not import into different fields in endnote (with change and move fields). Or you have to change the RIS field with search and replace in the text editor. For example, if you change the specific field tags to "N1 - " it will imported into the "notes" in zotero.
    But there are no easy answers to these kinds of problems, you have to try and see what happens.
