[Request] Media Type Image / Picture

Dear developers,

we kindly propose a new media type for zotero: an image (or a picture)

Several humanities (e.g. art history, archaeology) deal with images in their publications. And on the other side: they cite illustrations in other publications. They need a media type for register of illustrations.

We can roughly describe our needs for the media type as part of a book or single item. Usually, the standard fields like title, author asf. should be sufficient. The metadata for DOI or Dublin core can be a good starting point.

A simple "author" and a simple type like "image" should be easy and helpful enough. Any differentiation for painter, photographer asf., or painting, photograph, sketch asf. would be too much affort.

  • You're not the first person asking. FWIW, artwork (which maps to the more generic 'graphic' in citation styles) is usually a good workaround.
  • Thanks, @adamsmith! Because I was on Zotero5 until few days, I really didn't realized "artwork" as a media type yet.

But, as I took a closer look on the implementation and our needs, it is the second part of our proposal that might be important now: the "artwork" is - in our case - always part of something: a manuscript, an article, a book, ... nearly every media type can have illustrations.

The Book part-Book-relation and dialog is good example for the way how we think about it.
  • If you need s different format to Book Chapters you could reutilise Entry Encyclopaedia or Entry Dictionary. They are similarly a section of a larger piece.
