I hope to add support for displaying content in epub format

There are a lot of beautifully laid out epub books, but they don't display perfectly in Zotero, so I hope they can be optimized for support.

Can you link to examples or email them to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?

@baileichao: Thanks for sending the EPUB. These issues should be fixed in the next beta/release.
  • I have updated zotero to the latest version 7.0.15, and this version of the software has been able to support the normal format display of comments, but I also found other problems, that is, the color and font of the text do not seem to be displayed correctly. For example, in the picture below, there are paragraphs with reddish color, but zotero is still displayed in black, and its font is “KaiTi”, which is not displayed correctly.

I have sent the display text and font to support@zotero.org mailbox.
  • Click the Appearance ("Aa" icon) toolbar button and check "Use original font". (Or select your own favorite font in Zotero settings -> General -> Reader -> Ebook font.)

The color issue is harder - ebooks usually can't be trusted to set their own text colors. Does red text have a semantic meaning in this book? Or in Chinese books in general?
  • The different colors just to make the typesetting look more beautiful. For example, the sample books above show different contents with different fonts and colors, which is very beautiful. I consulted the book maker and really set the translation part to other colors instead of black.

In addition, in my understanding, the most important aspect of books in epub format is the extreme typesetting, which makes books look more pleasing to the eye through different typesetting beautification, rather than typesetting like pdf books but not as beautiful as epub format. If this attribute is lost, in fact, books in epub format will lose a great advantage.
Exquisite books have been carefully produced by the producers. If this effect cannot be expressed, it will be a great waste, and you will not be able to appreciate the exquisite book typesetting effect.
Admittedly, in fact, many reading softwares can't perfectly display the exquisite typesetting effect of books, which is a problem existing in most epub format readers at present. I have tried many commonly used epub softwares, but none of them are satisfactory. At present, the most perfect software I am using is Starrea, and the above picture shows the effect of opening with this software.
  • I understand that. It's difficult to balance allowing ebooks to make reasonable formatting decisions against preventing them from making unreasonable ones. We'll try to improve our approach in the future.
