Update_from_Zotero_6_to_Zotero_7,Windows_10

I am still using Zotero version 6.0.36 and would now like to update to the latest version 7 for Windows 64 bit.

My PC system:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.39 GHz
RAM: 32.0 GB, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, Windows 10 Pro, version 22H2

My Zotero 6 has a total of approx. 25940 items. Many with pdf-files, which are stored in my own Windows directory on a separate hard drive (via ‘Attach link to file’).

However, there are also attachements of pdf-files etc, stored by Zotero 6 in the storage-directory of Zotero 6.

The data directory location is ‘Custom’ under:
J:\Zotero\Zotero 6\Zotero_6-Kat and takes up 20.3 GB.

The database zotero.sqlite comprises 3,700,880 KB
The base directory is the hard-disk drive J:

I would like to keep this structure and directories of my data as they are: this has grown over many years!

I have saved the entire directory J:\, where the Zotero data is located, separately.

Zotero 6 is installed in the directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero_6_win32
and the User is installed under: C:\users\EN-Test\AppData\Roaming\Zotero
respectively C:\users\EN-Test\AppData\Roaming\Zotero\Zotero\Profiles .

I had been using Citavi for many years, in the end the version Citavi 6. The switch from Citavi 6 to Zotero 7.0.0-beta68 on 12 March 2024 failed completely. Most of the data and items were not transferred or only partially transferred. I then installed Zotero 6.0.36. The transfer from Citavi to Zotero 6 worked with all the items and attachments, but with the usual limitations.

Now I'm worried that the upgrade from Zotero 6 to the current Zotero 7 won't transfer all my data, items etc. or that something will be lost. My database is large, well maintained and contains a lot of additional information, web links etc..

Can I proceed as described on zotero.org/support/installation#how_do_i_upgrade...?

I appreciate any additional information about the update and what I should pay attention to.
Should I do the update manually? Or automatically via the help menu? My version 6 is 32 bit. The 7 version of Zotero should be 64 bit.

Just install Zotero 7 from the download page. (You could use Help → "Check for Updates…", but you'd still be on the 32-bit version and would want to reinstall anyway.) Your data won't be affected.
  • Thank you for your reply. But what do I have to do to get the 64-bit version (after updating to 7)? Do you mean that I should download and install the 32 bit version first? Then I can install the 64 bit version.
  • I mean exactly what I say — that you should just download Zotero from the download page. It gives you the 64-bit version by default.

I think the OP is assuming that upgrading to 32-bit v7 is a necessary step - it isn't, right?
  • no, it's not -- you can go straight from 6_32 to 7_64
  • Thanks to all of you, the update to the current Zotero version 7, 64 bit worked perfectly.

Thanks to all developers: Zotero 7 is much better to use than version 6 and it starts faster.

One point to note: after the 1st start of the current Zotero 7, “Show Files” did not work. After restarting the PC it did.
I don't know what the reason for this is. I have not changed anything in the settings.

I also have another thing that worked fine under Zotero 6, but now it no longer works: File Renaming: “Rename Files from Parent Metadata”.
I have enabled both checkboxes in the Settings->General->File Renaming:: “Automatically rename locally added files” and “Rename linked Files”.

In the settings->Advanced->Files and Folders I see that Zotero now uses relative paths. Is this the reason that File “Renaming” does nothing?
