run-time error 5

When I click on the 'add citation' icon in microsoft word, the 'run-time error 5 invalid procedure call or argument' pops up. I've tried every possible suggestion on internet but the problem persist. My macOS version is Catalina 10.15.7 and I've downloaded Zotero 6

    I've checked with this instruction and see no audio plugins in that file.

    See this thread particularly, posts from me and follow the troubleshooting instructions. Particularly see what happens if you run

    osascript -e "display dialog \"test\""

    in the Terminal.app.

    I followed the instruction in the post and gone through from 1 to 6, the same word pops up but this time the 'debug' option is available, highlighting a line of code which reads: wordAppPath$ = MacScript("POSIX path of (path to current application)")

    Oh. Where is Word stored on your machine? It should be in

    /Applications/Microsoft Word.app

    Yes, Word is stored in /Applications/Microsoft Word.app

    You should download Zotero 7 and see if it works there. You might need to close Word and reinstall the Word plugin from Zotero Preferences -> Cite.

    Actually I downloaded Zotero 7 first, but the same problem came up I then switched to Zotero 6 to suit my relatively old version of MacOS. Should I remove everything from Zotero 6 and try downloading Zotero 7 again?

    If it doesn't work with Zotero 7 let's try something else.

    What happens if you run

    osascript -e "display dialog \"test\""

    in the Terminal.app?

    osascript: can't open default scripting component.

    Something is preventing AppleScript from running on your system. As you have read, some users have identified audio plug-ins in the past, but it could be something else too that has low-level access to the system. It's hard to say how to troubleshoot this, other than trying to think of the most esoteric pieces of software that you have on your mac and trying to remove or disable them.
