When not connected to the internet, I cannot open entries even though my PDFs are all stored locally

Error
A file sync error occurred. Please try syncing again.
If you receive this message repeatedly, restart Zotero and/or your computer and try again. If you continue to receive the message, submit an error report and post the Report ID to a new thread in the Zotero Forums.

I got a new computer and copied all my Zotero data to it. When connected to the internet, Zotero works normally. However, when not connected to the internet, the entries cannot be opened, and an error appears as shown above. I can access the local storage folder by right-clicking on the PDF, so why does Zotero need to sync via the internet before opening a file? Can't it be opened directly from the local storage?

    S3 returned 0
We'd want to see a Debug ID for reproducing this. But Zotero would try to download the file if the remote version was newer, and you're getting an error connecting to Amazon cloud services. That would be some sort of problem with your internet connection.
  • My question is why I need an internet connection to view items that I have already downloaded locally. The error only occurs when there is no internet connection, but there is no issue when I am connected to the internet. However, when there is no internet, I can't upload the error log to the forum (because I have no internet). When I log out of my Zotero account in the client, I can open the items without syncing, and the issue doesn't occur, even without an internet connection. But if I'm logged into my account, every time I open an item, it tries to sync, and if there's no internet, the item can't be opened.
  • As I say, it would happen if the remote version is newer (or potentially if it's not sure, such as if you ran Reset File Sync History). Zotero won't just open a local version that it knows is out of date, because that would cause you to lose data or end up with an unresolveable file conflict.
However, when there is no internet, I can't upload the error log to the forum (because I have no internet).
You can reproduce this with logging enabled, disable logging, and wait until you have an internet connection to submit it.
  • Thank you very much for your help and answers. I have uploaded my error log, and this is my Debug ID: 379609510.
  • That's a Report ID, not a Debug ID, and you're on an outdated beta.
  • Sorry, I mixed up the report ID and debug ID. I have updated my software version, and this is my debug ID: D769412159.

(3)(+0000000): File exists but is queued for download -- re-downloading
Yes, so this is what I say above — the file is marked as having been (potentially) changed remotely, so Zotero needs to check the online version first.
(3)(+0000000): Request ended with status 2152398878

    (1)(+0000000): S3 returned 0 for 1/QM8IKAIG -- retrying download
Can you provide a Debug ID for Zotero startup, using the "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option?
  • OK, this is the new Debug ID: D1739149099

"the file is marked as having been (potentially) changed remotely, so Zotero needs to check the online version first"
How can I solve this problem?
