translators for ACL / ICLR / open review showing Journal Articles not Conference Papers

For the past few weeks, the zotero plugin has stopped translating the metadata from some conference proceedings papers correctly - I've noticed it for ACL, ICLR, NeurIPS.
The metadata is missing conference names, proceedings titles, often year, and labels the entry as "journal article" not "conference paper".
This used to work but doesn't any longer, across a number of translators/conferences. Interestingly CVPR still works correctly.

Two random example pdfs that don't work for me:
https://openreview.net/pdf?id=V8jrrnwGbuc

https://aclanthology.org/2022.findings-emnlp.93.pdf
for which I get the following - correct title & authors but no year, proceedings, etc.

Zotero Connector 5.0.152 with Zotero 7.0.7 using Vivaldi browser on Linux.
  • I may be wrong about this, but I don't think we ever had a translator for Open Review. On catalog ("forum") pages, it uses the Embedded Metadata translator, but saving directly from the PDF will just get you basic info via Retrieve Metadata. We can look into adding a site-specific translator.

The ACL Anthology PDF should be working, though. What do you see on the Zotero Connector toolbar icon in your browser? Is it a PDF icon or a conference paper icon?

Saving from the catalog page instead of the PDF (https://openreview.net/forum?id=V8jrrnwGbuc, https://aclanthology.org/2022.findings-emnlp.93/) will work for the time being.
  • Thanks for your response!
Re Open Review, does that imply that something has changed about how they store metadata in the pdfs?

For the ACL anthology pdf above, I see this icon - not sure what it is but it's not the pdf icon I see for the openreview pdf.

I usually hide my address bar and add to zotero via the right-click menu. I'm now noticing that this has *different* behavior than clicking on the zotero addon toolbar icon in address bar:
    - click on toolbar icon: zotero adds correct metadata (conference paper etc), no pdf
    - right click, save to zotero, save to zotero (ACL web): *nothing happens*. I think this is actually a relatively longstanding issue that I have been ignoring.
    - right click, save to zotero (pdf): zotero adds the pdf but with the wrong metadata (ie the journal article shown above).
    - for completeness: if I right-click on the toolbar icon and save the pdf, I also get the pdf with "journal article" metadata, not the correct metadata.
  • Re Open Review, does that imply that something has changed about how they store metadata in the pdfs?
Hard to say without seeing the metadata you were getting before and the metadata you get now on the same PDF.
click on toolbar icon: zotero adds correct metadata (conference paper etc), no pdf
Do you have "Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when saving items" enabled in Zotero client preferences? Does the same thing happen when you save from the toolbar button in Chrome or Firefox?
right click, save to zotero, save to zotero (ACL web): *nothing happens*.
I can reproduce in Chrome. Issue filed - thanks.
right click, save to zotero (pdf): zotero adds the pdf but with the wrong metadata (ie the journal article shown above).
This is likely just a limitation of PDF metadata retrieval. You shouldn't need to get item metadata that way when saving directly from the site, though - a site-specific translator should be grabbing better information. We'll fix the issues you're seeing with that.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I expected to download the pdf. I don't have that setting "Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when saving items" enabled and it's fine with me - sometimes I do just want the citation, not the file.

Thank you for fixing things! Zotero is a huge part of my work, I really appreciate it.
