[Z7 Beta] Automatic page detection (?) wrongly overwrites PDF pagination

edited October 16, 2023
Hi all,

I've discovered a problem with this PDF: https://marxwirklichstudieren.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/mew_band33.pdf

To reproduce, go to book page 205 (as shown in the top right corner of the scan). Annotate (highlight) one sentence on the page. The annotation will wrongly show page number 46, which is the number of the letter, not the page. Checking the box "automatically detect" from the annotations kebab menu does not have any effect (but to be honest I have never understood what it is supposed to do).
I ususally am quite grateful for the automatic page detection, but I think it might make sense to preferably trust the embedded page numbers of the pdf.

Have a good sunday!

  • We'll improve this. Thanks for the file.

Page numbers often aren't embedded in PDF files, or sometimes they are incorrect. We try to use various methods to determine the correct page number, but there's room for improvement.
  • I think maybe a toogle to "use PDF page labels for page numbers" would be helpful (maybe instead of "automatically detect page numbers", which does not seem to do anything at the moment?). That would also be helpful to reset page numbers that were changed manually.
  • I've found another unusual case; when annotating in this PDF (https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316338902.005), the annotations are numbered according to the physical numbers (1, 2, 3) even though in the navigation bar, the correctly determined logical page numbers (72, 73 etc.) are displayed.
  • I've found another case in which the automatic page detection produces irrational results; on page 12 and 13 of this book (https://www.beck-elibrary.de/10.17104/9783406721311/interpretieren-um-zu-veraendern?page=1), Z7 wrongly assumes that the DOI is the page number. • Most of the page label recognition regressions should already be fixed in the Zotero 7 beta. If you encounter any more issues, please report them.
  • Hey there - I am finding that the automatic page numbering is quite inconsistent in my library - some PDFs work great, and others are simply not recognizing the on-page numbering. Is there something that I can do to help Zotero recognize the correct page numbers? I am using Zotero 7.
  • @mikanovd: You can send PDFs that don't work to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.
