Why Zotero eats so many RAMs

Hello everyone,

It seems that Zotero eats 9GB of precious RAM ($200/8GB) from my MacBook. Any ideas?

macOS Sequoia 15.3
Zotero 7.0.11 latest (Apple Silicom, arm64)

Many thanks!

  • Do you have any plugins installed? Try running Zotero in troubleshooting mode (Help - Restart in Troubleshooting Mode) and see if the problem persists.

I run mine on Windows 11, with 2500+ items in my Library and plenty of tabs open, and it never uses more than 1 GB of RAM.
  • Hello Gustms, thanks for your message. After disabling all plugins, RAM cost seems reduced a lot but still takes 2GB without any open tabs.
  • Did you restart Zotero and let it settle? With all tabs closed and all plugins disabled, Zotero 7.0.11 takes 700–800 MB for me on Apple Silicon after a restart. It definitely shouldn't take 2 GB.
  • Thank you dstillman. After reboot, it now decreased to less than 1GB. However, the RAM usage will increase a lot once plugins (zotero-pdf-translate, zoplicate) are enabled and tabs are opened.

You should figure out individual plugins that are causing that and report that to the plugin developers.
