ASA 6th/7th edition - in-text order (chronological then alphabetical)?

Hello,

I am using a modified ASA style (6th/7th edition), in which I changed the in-text citations to be ordered chronologically and not alphabetically. However, now all the items are in chronological order, even if two or three of them are by the same author. For instance:

(Lakoff and Johnson 1980; Johnson 1987; Lakoff 1993; Grady 1997; Goatly 1997; Lakoff and Johnson 1999; Peña Cervel 2004; Gibbs 2006a; Semino 2008; Kövecses 2010; Thibodeau and Boroditsky 2011; Kövecses 2020a)

Here, Kövecses is listed two times, but I would like to change it to: ... Semino 2008; Kövecses 2010, 2020a, Thibodeau...

Can someone help me do that? Which bit of code should I look for?

Best regards,
/Milena

if you just switch the two keys in the sort order and leave everything else in place that should just work (and does for me):

(Nattermann and Villain 1988; Farnham 2014, 2023; Lasher and Sixta Rinehart 2016)

Have you tried with a different citation? In a new document just for testing? Obviously this should always work, but it'd be helpful to figure out if this _never_ works for you or just doesn't in a very specific case.
  • Thank you so much, adamsmith!

I first tested with a new document and everything worked perfectly. I then went back to my original document and switched citation style to a different one, and then back to my modified version of ASA - which did the trick. It was apparently just a one-off thing.

    All the best
