Plugin Word not working on Mac

I have been trying to install the word plugin in various ways on my Mac also by following the https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_integration and have the Zotero.dotm file in my startup>word folder, but I still can't get it to work. There is no Zotero tab in word, but it is there if you click right of the most right tab (view). Then the Add/edit citation and so forth buttons appear, but nothing happens if I click on them. I have tried restarting my computer and exchanging the plugin file for a newly downloaded one. I send a screenshot of how it looks in word and hope someone can help me out!

What exact Word version? Can you provide a Report ID from Zotero?

If you delete that Zotero.dotm file, does the empty tab go away?

Thanks for your reply here are the details:
Word Version 16.93 (25011212) and yes the tab goes away even if I remove the tick for the Zotero.dotm file via tools>templates and addins

    here is the error report:

    [unrelated lines removed — D.S.]

    appName => Zotero, version => 7.0.11 (ARM64), os => macOS 15.3, locale => en-GB, extensions => Folder Import for Zotero (0.0.7, extension, disabled)

That wasn't my question, though. I'm asking whether the tab goes away if you delete Zotero.dotm from your Word Startup folder.

You should delete Zotero.dotm from your Startup folder, confirm that the tab (broken or otherwise) is completely gone from Word, and then and only then follow the reinstallation steps.

(We also only ever want a Report ID here, not the contents of the error report.)

Sorry for not answering the way you wanted and being unclear, but yes when I remove the dotm file the tab goes away after restarting word (not before restarting).
I already tried reinstalling a couple of times (after removing the file and emptying the waste bin) and can't get it to work, I'm sure I do something wrong, I just don't understand what it is.

It looks like you are installing a Zotero.dotm meant for Windows. Where did you get this file? Make sure you remove it from the Word startup folder. Then follow Manually Installing the Zotero Word Processor Plugin instructions specifically for macOS.

EDIT: Ignore the above. If you open the Zotero.dotm file directly with Word, does the toolbar show up and work? Do you get a notification about macros? What macro setting do you have set in Word Settings -> Security?
  • I have the same issue as JosyterBeek. The plugin is there, but without a name, so if I go next to "View" I can access it but it has no functionality.
Macro security is set to "Disable all macros without notification" and is set by my company, so I cannot change it.

I have tried multiple reinstalls, opening Zotero.dotm directly also has no effect
  • If it's a company issued machine you will have to troubleshoot with your IT. If you still have issues please create a new thread and describe your situation in detail, with everything you have tried.
  • Thanks, turns out Microsoft defender was blocking all macros, including Zotero. They added an exception and now it works. May be worth adding this note in the troubleshooting document.
  • Could your IT point us to the specific preference which causes the issue and/or steps to reproduce it?
