Zotero deletes letter when inserting citation!

I am a frequent Zotero + Google Docs user and this is definitely a new bug, just started happening yesterday.

So I place my cursor right after the word I want to insert the citation (no text selected).

Click insert citation, select the citation, click OK.

The character to the left of the cursor always gets deleted!

  • @lamdan: This is now fixed in the latest Zotero Connector beta for Firefox. We'll release a new version for Chrome and Edge, as well as a non-beta version for Firefox, soon. Thanks for reporting.

@lamdan: Now fixed in the release version of the Zotero Connector for Firefox, version 5.0.88.
  • @lamdan We had to roll back the fix temporarily for the stable release due to a translation bug in Firefox, but we will have it out again soon.
  • @dstillman @adomasven Thank you so much for your quick and helpful response. I work in Chrome and look forward to the new version
  • A new Zotero Connector beta for Firefox is out now that includes this fix.
  • @dstillman - Any updates on a fix for Chrome? Thanks for all your help on this!
  • Yes, this has been fixed in the Chrome connector for a couple weeks.
  • Hi there. I'm a new Zotero user but this issue is also happening to me exactly as described in the OP.
I'm using Google docs + Firefox. At first I had the regular connector installed when I noticed this issue occurring. I've since installed the Beta connector just in case, but the issue persists. It is also occurring across different citation styles (I have tried using CMoS 17 (author-date), as well as Cite Them Right 12th Ed. Harvard).

  • Does this happen if you disable all other extensions (or try in a new Firefox profile)?
  • Yes, tried disabling all extensions and using a new Firefox profile. Issue persists.
  • Do you have a different Google account that you could test with and confirm it also occurs there? Could you test with Chrome and see if it occurs there?
  • Okay, seems the issue is specific to the email tied to my university account. I tried creating a new google doc with my personal account and could not replicate the issue there. I don't have Chrome installed and would prefer not to install it unless you think it's necessary?
  • I'm also now noticing that if I open the 'add/edit citation' menu and exit without entering a citation, the last character just before the cursor gets truncated. Meaning the word 'apple' gets truncated to 'appl' just by opening the add/edit citation menu.
  • Could you take a screenshot of the Google Docs editor that you see with your university account. Can you tell if it's visually different from the editor you see with your personal account somehow?
  • Here's an imgur library of my google docs editors for both my accounts. The only obvious difference I'm noticing is that I have an 'Accessibility' option on my university account which is not showing on my personal account.

  • Hmm. Google performs A/B tests from time to time (where they run a different version of their website for a small portion of their users to test changes) so this is most likely related to that. Unless this is something that shows up for a larger number of users (i.e. us, so that we are able to reproduce it), we're unlikely to be able to troubleshoot it. It might be worth a shot to test it with Chrome just in case it works fine there. It's quite possible that it will resolve itself after some refresh of Google Docs.
  • Okay. I'll give it a try with Chrome in the coming few days and let you know if anything different occurs. Thanks for your help regardless :)
  • FWIW, Edge tends to behave identical to Chrome (they use the same engine), so if you're on Windows you could try that.
  • Just tried on Edge and yeah I can replicate the issue on my uni account.
