Zotero 7: inserting notes causes stutters/blinks and moves focus

edited December 21, 2024
Sorry for the report : what I am experiencing is due to some plugin as starting in troubleshooting mode (which I should have done, but forgot) does not show the problem. I'll report when I can identify what exactly is causing the issue.

Since a few versions ago (not sure when), when I type a note manually the following things happen:

- While inserting the note, if I stop typing for about a second, the note blinks one to three times. (And the initial part of the text of the note is then shown in the item.)

- When that happens, focus on the note is lost because and if I continue typing nothing is entered. I need to use the mouse to focus on the note again. This is not a window manager issue (and this happens in the seven window managers I've tested): focus remains in the Zotero window, but not in the note pare (or maybe it remains in the note, but somehow typing does not insert characters in the note).

- If I "Edit in a separate window", then focus is not lost (i.e., I can continue typing without refocusing in the note), but the blinking is present.

The above two behaviors happen both when inserting new notes and when adding/modifying an existing note.

I am attaching two videos that illustrate the issue. I am running Linux, with XMonad as window manager, though I also see the issue with the following window managers: xfce4, fvwm, i3, herbstluftwm, bspwn, and stumpwm. I see this on two different machines. Zotero version: 7.0.11 (though I am sure I've observed this with 7.0.10 and 7.0.9 and most likely also other versions before).

  • I have this problem too, on Windows 11, and it showed up within the last month or so.

The only way I can edit the note is to put it in a separate window.

  • @scotto: As @rdiaz02 says above, this was caused by a plugin and doesn't happen in Troubleshooting Mode. You should always test in Troubleshooting Mode before posting here. If this still happens in Troubleshooting Mode, start a new thread.

@scotto: as far as I can tell, this is caused by Zotero Better BibTeX. I opened a github issue here: https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-better-bibtex/issues/3113 . (I think it would be great if you can confirm this, and maybe add to the bug report, in particular since you are using a different operating system from mine). (I probably should have added the link to the github issue a few weeks ago; apologies for the incomplete edit).
