Zotero could not find an identifier in your input, report id 1705627934

Hi, I am new to using Zotero. For the past few weeks everything went great and I was able to add articles through the identifier. Yesterday suddenly it was not possible anymore to do that - not with an ISSN or with a DOI number. When I tried to add an article through the identifier the following message poped up and still does: "Zotero could not find an identifier in your input. Please check your input and try again."
I have tried everything: downloading it again, checking the add-on, all the things listed on your website but nothing seems to help. :/
Today I tried again and now it is possible to add an article with a DOI number (yay!), but not with an ISSN number.
I have transmitted an error report and have the report id 1705627934.
Please help me :)
Thank you very much!
  • Provide specific ISSNs or DOIs that you are having issues with.
  • It is every ISSN that I am having issues with. For example: 0721-8834, 1561-2791, 0341-7301. The article with the ISSN 0341-7301 has an DOI too (10.30820/0341-7301-2022-2-158). Adding it with the DOI number is possible, it is only the ISSN number that is giving me trouble.

An ISSN isn't what you're looking to use — that identifies an entire journal, magazine, etc., not an article. You need to use an identifier for an individual work, like a DOI or ISBN. The DOI is the correct thing to use for your example, and there's no other equivalent identifier. (You can see that the ISSN is just a prefix of the full DOI, since it's just identifying the journal.)
  • Oh okay, thank you, that makes sense. Strangely the first few times it worked. So I assumed there must be another problem.
Is there a similar way that I can add an ISSN? Or do I have to add it manually every time?
    Thanks for your help :)

Your question doesn't make sense — you can't store an entire journal in Zotero. I promise you an ISSN didn't work.
  • I meant to ask if there is a way to add one article of the entire journal in Zotero if I don't have a DOI. Or if I have to add in manually.
    Sorry for the confusion.
  • Can you provide an example?
  • To be clear, normally you would save from the website, not using Add Item by Identifier.

    https://www.zotero.org/support/adding_items_to_zotero#via_your_web_browser
  • Thank you, I didn't know that I could just save if from the website. This is so much easier and helps a lot with my problem. Thank you very much for your time, ressources and help! :)
