Can Zotero ever implement "https" removal for AMA?

Previous threads have sprung up as early as 2020 with the samey answer "it's not possible". Yes, I know I can remove them manually, but it is such a drag and error-prone. Is it theoretically possible for the Zotero team to work on a removal? Or is this a permanent limitation to the coding structure of the program, thereby forcing me to use other citation managers?
  • Remove "https" from where?
  • AMA 11 prefers a DOI that is not a URL. However the standard .csl for AMA 11 in Zotero still outputs the DOI as a URL (https://doi.org...) instead of "doi:".

I did some more testing since I started the thread and noticed that it is outputting correctly for papers in online journal articles, but screws up if the paper is also a book section. What is the best workaround for this? Converting book section to journal article in item type?
  • I’m not sure what you mean—the AMA CSL style uses the “doi:” prefix not “https://doi.org/

To be clear, you should enter the DOI number alone in the DOI field in your Zotero library, not the URL field
  • That only applies to online journal articles. For articles that are part of a book, Zotero does not currently support a DOI field and thus when I "grab" an article using the Connector, the doi is saved as a URL instead.

You can enter the DOI in the extra field like so:
    DOI: 10.000asdf/12345

Citation styles will pick that up and if Zotero adds the DOI field for this item thoe in the future that should be migrated also.

Is there a way to manually add the DOI field in the .csl file? I can make individual manual changes but the connector will consistently grab the DOI as a URL.
  • from what URL? You can't fix this issue in the CSL file, no.

When you use the Zotero connector extension to add a paper, if that paper is published physically as a book section, Zotero will treat the paper as a book section, grab the available DOI, and convert that to a URL (aka "https://doi.org/_"). I will live with @damnation workaround for the time being.
  • No, that's not how metadata saving works — it varies entirely by site. If you want our help, you need to provide an example URL.
  • Oh so it varies by site. Thank you for explaining. I will test a few different sites to see the differences. Does DOI for Book Section usually get imported to the extra field, then?
  • It should, and if you tell us where it isn't (i.e. provide links) there's a good chance we can fix it
