Add support for the vertical layout EPUB format books

edited August 16, 2024
Currently viewing vertical layout ebooks in Zotero has several issues: I can neither scroll nor jump to next page, it jumps to next section, also reading the remaining content of a page is impossible. Additionally, some text appears outside the viewer borders.

  • Please email the EPUB file to support@zotero.org and include a link to this thread.
  • Has the problem been resolved? Vertical epub files are frequently used for Japanese books and some Chinese (esp. traditional Chinese) and Korean books. If necessary, I would be happy to emails several epub files with vertical layout to the above email address. I understand that there are many things of high priority on the team's schedule, but this bug is a deal-breaker for many users in East Asian countries.

Thank you so much for the hard work. I hope this bug can be fixed soon and then I could start using the wonderful reader.
  • Vertical EPUBs should work in Scrolled mode (View -> Scrolled). Last I looked into this, supporting vertical text in Paginated mode wasn’t possible due to layout engine limitations. Please do send those EPUBs in and we’ll see what we can do.
  • Many thanks for clarifying the workaround. Though having paginated mode (or plus a horizontal scrolling mode) would be better, it works now! I have sent two examples of vertical EPUBs to the support email address.
  • @foxal, @tksze: The next beta will have significantly improved support for books with vertical text in both modes (Paginated and Scrolled).
  • Thank you so much for your work!
