PDF annotation post-Zotfile (Boox or other)

Since Zotero 7 is incompatible with Zotfile I haven't been using my Boox tablet much recently, however the Android app has mostly solved that. I can now also log into my Zotero account as a cloud account on my Boox device and can download and edit the PDFs.

My current problem is a bigger one, namely that I can't figure out how I can have Zotero recognize those annotations as such, to maintain the option of deleting annotations on my PC. Zotfile had an amazing option that it would duplicate the PDF, I would annotate one, it would keep a "clean" version, and then if I have to send someone the PDF they don't have to do with my chickenscratch in the margins.

Is there currently a work-around for this?

If there are suggestions to a tablet that deals with this differently, e.g. one where the annotations can be recognized by Zotero, and thus aren't "hardcoded" into the PDF, I might consider that as well.

Thanks!
  • Why not just annotate in Zotero on Android/Boox? That's the whole idea of the app.
  • Oh right, I forgot to add this: I've tried annotating with the app on the Boox device. However, currently the functionality/compatibility with the pen isn't great yet. Always having to select the pen tool in Zotero, and then switching to the eraser is a little awkward.

Ideally Zotero would recognize the pen like the native Boox apps, and then also recognize the switch to the eraser side. Is something like this in the foreseeable future? Thanks!!
  • Is this planned? Thanks :)
  • We'll look into whether we can support the eraser on a Boox.
  • It's not only the eraser... Boox NeoReader has really cool functionality, like handwriting OCR in languages that no other support (mostly RTL languages). It also has some very convinient functions for annotating using a smart AI enhanced lasso tool. The issue that the NeoReader annotations are saved as separate file and cannot be synced back
