Open all catalogs with one click

Once zotero6, once you open the attachment pdf, the catalog has not folded, all open. Now zotero7, once you open the pdf, the directory is all collapsed, will not be expanded. Catalog is a lot of cases, one by one point to open, very not intuitive, too low efficiency. I hope the back can be changed back.
  • It's not clear what you mean by "catalog" and "directory." Feel free to write in your native language if that's easier.

If you're saying that the sections ("Info", "Abstract") in the item pane are all collapsed, right-click any of the headers and choose "Expand All Sections." They're only collapsed if you've collapsed them yourself, though.
  • I'm talking about the catalog inside the attached pdf, which can't be expanded directly all the way by default.

  • I actually prefer that the outline be collapsed by default. For me, it's quicker to find a specific entry by first selecting the chapter, then section, etc. instead of scrolling around.
  • @Choose519 It was always like that. Double-click the outline button to expand/collapse it.
  • @martynas_b: I don't know about earlier versions of Zotero. But I have just tested in Zotero 6.0.27, and indeed the default was to get the outline fully expanded.
It is also the case for most PDF readers.

But I also agree that I prefer seeing a collapsed outline as default. The outline is most useful for me for long books. I prefer getting an overview of the chapters of the book when opening it, rather than seeing the complete outline tree of a single chapter:

    vs:

    Some possibilities would be:
    - Set the default preference in the settings
    - Remember the state of the outline, in the same way as for the collections tree after closing and reopening Zotero
Double-click the outline button to expand/collapse it.
The first double-click after switching to the Outline tab does not do anything for me. Only the second double-click in working.

  • After doing some more testing, it seems that the depth at which the outline is expanded depends on the PDF file.
In Zotero 6 (I have tested Zotero 6.0.10 and 6.0.27 on Windows 10), the Reader was respecting that setting, same as most PDF readers.
Now in Zotero 7, that setting is overwritten to open all outlines only at their first level.

Ok, correction: Each PDF file has its own properties for each outline item, determining whether it’s expanded or collapsed. This is how it worked in Zotero 6 and other viewers. Zotero 7 aims to normalize this behavior.

    We'll fix it. Thanks.
  • Thank you.

@martynas_b Could this (Zotero 6 way vs Zotero 7 way) be allowed to choose by means of a preference?

    I also prefer Z6 behaviour.

    Thanks!
  • @iagogv Can you explain why?
  • @martynas_b
Mainly, because one level of expansion could not be enough. I agree that for a book with many levels it can be tedious, but depending on the document it can be better just one level, or 2 or 3.

Actually, rethinking, my suggestion would be:
    1. Adding as a preference the number of levels user wants the outline of a document opened first time will be expanded.
    2. After opening and possibly customizing document expansion keeping that in memory (as Zotero keeps in memory the pdf page was being focused)
  • @iagogv We could try automatically determining the optimal expansion level by using a threshold for the maximum default number of visible outline item rows.
  • @martynas_b "the optimal expansion" may be a bit subjective, but it would be better than nothing.

    Thanks!
