Zotero code are broken after transfering from Word to Google Docs

edited December 6, 2024
Hello there,

I had a Word document with 200+ references in Zotero, taken from my personal library as well as a shared one.

I carefully followed the instructions provided on how to transfer the Word doc into a Google Doc, but sadly when I hit "referesh" all the references appear in some funny code (I think json/html) and I get a message that the references have been corrupted..

Can you please help?
I am happy to send you the document in a private message.

Best,
Limor

Did you change the document in Word to the Zotero transfer format? That is when all your citations should have changed to JSON links. You should open that document in Google Docs (make sure to convert it from .docx first) and hit refresh, at which point those JSON links should turn back into citations.

Do note that we do not recommend working with Google Docs on documents of such magnitude as unfortunately Google Docs is much slower and overall more prone to breakage when citing with Zotero in large documents. You can collaborate on your document in Word by putting your document on OneDrive and sharing it to your collaborators where they can also edit it in Word or Word Online (no Zotero functionality there yet).

Thanks, yes, I followed all the steps as instructed.
    Will try again though.

Sadly we are a big group of collaborators who all need to edit the document simultaneously, so Gdoc is really the best option. But noted on the slowness - we definitely noticed it.
